GRRR: Garfield Cheetahs are Responsible, Respectful and Ready

horizontal line

Hi Garfield Families,

Welcome to our new families and welcome back to our returning Cheetahs! I hope you are all doing well. I understand it has been a challenging time on so many levels for all of us. School has been one of those pressure points for you and I hope this communication can answer some of your questions as we get ready to start the year. Thank you for your patience as we have made preparations for a strong start. We look forward to seeing you and working together.

Welcome Back to Garfield:

In following Department of Health guidelines we will not hold an in-person meet and greet like we have done in the past. Instead, we would like to invite you to an all-school Town Hall meeting. These will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 12:30 and then again at 6:00. We will send out a link to you and we hope you can make it to one of these events.

Class Lists will be posted on Skyward by Friday, September 4th at 5PM

Student Supplies:

We are putting together boxes for all students that will include school supplies, textbooks and other items specific to your child’s classroom. Unfortunately, the delivery of these boxes has been delayed. We hope they will arrive and we can coordinate a pick up by the second week of school. Basic supplies will be provided and will be sufficient for our start. Please don’t feel you need to purchase items at this point.

First Day of school will be on September 9. At 9:00, all classes will meet, via zoom, for our first day. Please look for a link sent by your child’s teacher.

Preschool and Kindergarten Parents:

Preschool families will receive a separate email on Thursday regarding daily schedules and preschool.  Family meetings will be scheduled based upon family availability.   Kindergarten family meetings will happen on the 9th, 10th, and 11th. School for preschool and kindergarten will begin on Monday, September 14th

Teacher/Family Conferences: Sept. 10, 11, 14 and 15.

Our intent is to start the year meeting individually with families. We will  have an opportunity to meet each other, pass along classroom-specific information, and answer any questions you might have. We will send out invitations soon and ask you to sign-up, via Skyward,  for your appointment. Please make sure your skyward email is updated.

Parent Resources link:

This link will connect you to a resource page that includes information about registration, directions to get onto skyward and trainings for our new platform Schoology which all students will use to access lessons, assignments and meetings.

If you haven’t already done so, please make arrangements to pick up a chromebook for your child.

We request that families schedule an appointment to come in for pickups and swaps, so we can avoid crowding and follow social distancing guidelines. Pick up will occur at the Knox Administrative building, at the exterior Technology/Warehouse area. Directions will be provided upon registration for pickup/swap.  Please click on the following link to get started:

If you have any questions or concerns, you may call our family helpdesk line, 360-596-8530, or email us at  Thank you!

Also, if you need help with technology our District has set up a Parent Tech Help - 596-8530

Activity Descriptions:

  • Morning Meeting: all class zoom for teachers, students and support staff to connect, take attendance and check-in, Second Steps lessons
  • Instruction: This will be a combination of live instruction, recorded lessons, independently assigned work. Classroom teachers will provide specific times and structure to families. This can be a time where families can access pre-recorded or menu activities from our specialists as well.
  • Small Group: This will be live zoom to support students depending on their needs
  • Student support: This time is set aside for teachers and staff to provide support for students. It may include academic or social groups. Participation can be determined by families, students and/or teachers
  • Office Hours: This is dedicated for staff to be available to answer family and student questions, help problem-solve issues that arise (which  could include academics, social/emotional, technical issues).
  • Specialist Wednesdays: On Wednesday our specialists will have a scheduled live instruction for classes. Additionally, they will also post activities and lessons for kids on teacher’s Schoology accounts. This will allow you, and our students, to access these lessons at your convenience. Teachers will include this schedule in their Schoology Site.
  • Library: Library will be included in our Specialist schedule. Additionally, we are working with the health dept. and our District to arrange a safe method for students to select, pick-up and drop -off books. Please stay tuned for this information.

Lunches will be provided Monday thru Friday from our cafeteria and are free for Garfield students again this year. Please note this change: We will not be able to serve lunch to children who do not attend Garfield. We need to account for students this year, so we will have a list of student names to mark as you receive your lunch.

11:30-1:00- Grab and Go Sack Lunches (+ breakfast for the next day)

12:00-12:30 - Grab and Go Hot Lunch

Sack Lunches will be served near the exterior doors of our cafeteria. For hot lunch we will have signs for you to follow into the cafeteria. We will continue to follow Dept. Health guidelines and require all people to wear a mask and observe 6 foot distancing when at the school.

Please complete and return the online income survey form. Garfield depends on having all families complete this form, regardless of income, so we can continue to offer free lunch to all students. Thanks and let us know if you need help getting this completed.
