Extra Learning Opportunities

Academic Interventions
Garfield Elementary School is proud to provide a high quality Reading and Math Intervention Program. During school year 16-17 this program will focus on academics in grades K through five. Our district and school goal is to have all students reading at grade level by the end of third grade.

Each day, Garfield staff teach 90 minute instructional blocks focused on reading, and grade levels receive extra teaching resources during that time. This provides the opportunity for our students to meet in small groups that address their reading skills and needs. Our teachers and para-professionals are trained to provide early intervention when a learning or skill gap is identified.

Also, based on need, some students receive 30-60 minutes of additional, skill-specific, focused reading and/or math instruction each day at a different time.

M.O.R.E (More Opportunities for Recreation & Enrichment)
The Garfield M.O.R.E. program takes place Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:22-4:20. Each session runs for approximately six weeks and students must register. Classes include sports, art, crafts, music and etc. Parent and community volunteers lead most classes. Donations are accepted to help cover the costs of transportation, snacks and supplies. If you have a great idea for a class or would like to lead a class, please call Linda at (360) 596-6900.
