Extra Learning Opportunities
Reading and Math Interventions
Garfield Elementary School is proud to provide a high quality Reading and Math Intervention Program. During school year 08-09 this program will focus on reading in grades K through three. Our district and school goal is to have all students reading at grade level by the end of third grade.
Each day, Garfield staff teach 90 minute instructional blocks focused on reading, and each grade level receives extra teaching resources during that time. This provides the opportunity for our students to meet in small groups that address their reading skills and needs. Our teachers and para-professionals are trained to provide early intervention when a learning or skill gap is identified.
Also, based on need, some students receive 30-60 minutes of additional, skill-specific, focused reading instruction each day at a different time.
We will expand our intervention program to include math during the 09-10 school year (or earlier if resources allow).
Homework Center
Garfield School is proud to provide an
after school Homework Center in the library after school from 3:22 p.m. to 4:22 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday
and Thursday of each week. Children can get homework help
from Garfield paraeducators and volunteers. The library has books,
computers and other resources to help children be successful with their
assignments. Please contact Catherine Grunenfelder at (360) 596-6900 for
further details and registration.
M.O.R.E (More
Opportunities for Recreation & Enrichment)
The Garfield M.O.R.E. program takes place Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday from 3:22-4:20. Each session runs for approximately six weeks
and students must register. Classes include sports, art, crafts, music
and etc. Parent and community volunteers lead most classes. Donations
are accepted to help cover the costs of transportation, snacks and
supplies. If you have a great idea for a class or would like to lead a
class, please call Linda at

Student Council
Garfield's student council consists of responsible students from grades first through fifth. Students work cooperatively to develop ideas and solve problems. Student council is a service organization and assists the school in anyway. Student council also supports the Garfield community.
